Dress buying tips - The Bride’s Guide from Wedding Belles & Beaus

Selecting your wedding dress should be a joy; stick to these very simple tips to make the process that
little bit easier!
Timing ~ ideally allow 8 months – please don’t risk being too late as this will limit your choices when trying to find  your perfect dress
Keep it Special ~ allow maximum of the three people closest to you whose opinion you value most at your appointment and fittings – Keep it a Surprise!
Budget ~ do your research and know what your limit is; remember only a 50% deposit is required
upon ordering
Stay fresh ~ don’t cram in too many appointments and have lunch in between
Size ~ aim to lose weight by all means – but don’t delay to try on as every dress can be taken in

What is the process?

Firstly we ask you to complete our registration form – it’s very important that we have all correct details – about you and your wedding. The next step is for you to browse our dresses – they are organised by Designer. You then select your favourite six; so that we have an idea of what you might like and can make other suggestions based on your taste and body shape.

Finding the right size

Once you have made your decision and are ready to order your wedding dress we take your bust, waist and hip measurements – it’s important to note - rarely is anyone a standard size on all three of these together, so we recommend the best size dress for you, depending on fit and style. Some brides want to lose weight – we advise not to order more than two sizes smaller, but everyone loses and gains weight in different areas and at different speeds– so discuss this with your consultant to find the best solution. Again this often depends on the shape of the gown. Once you have ordered your dress – it is yours – so please be realistic about what you know you can lose.

Getting the best fit

We work in partnership with an excellent seamstress who can make alterations to achieve the optimum fit. At the very least your bridal gown will need to be taken up or hemmed by our seamstress – and this means each layer; sometimes beading needs to be removed or lace rearranged – so even this is not always a quick job.

You should factor in costs for alterations into the whole cost of your wedding dress. It is extremely difficult for us to be exact about these costs before seeing you in the gown – but naturally we will advise where we can. The seamstress is paid direct; you will be given a quotation to agree prior to any work being undertaken.
When do I order my wedding dress?
As general rule – wedding dresses must be ordered six months in advance, so give yourself enough time to select and order your dress. And then factor in time for the alterations – we recommend about another two months for this. We have some designs that take less time – but stick to the six-eight months rule to ensure that you are not disappointed. If however you do find that you need a wedding dress quickly still come to us – we do stock some bridal gowns that have a quicker turnaround, plus we may have a sample that you like. All wedding dresses are made to order (doesn’t apply to samples) – so once you have ordered and paid a 50% deposit – this is your dress, with the balance to be paid as soon as the gown is received at Wedding Belles & Beaus.
Making it right for you
At Wedding Belles & Beaus we work with a truly excellent, very experienced seamstress – which means as well as having a dress that fits well you also have the option to customise your bridal gown, such as extra beading, changes to sleeves, the addition of a sash etc. Our collection already includes such things as boleros, jackets and capes – but some of our brides have commissioned these to match their wedding dress – and our seamstress creates it.

Like alterations, cost depends on the fabric, style and work involved, etc so please talk to us so that we can advise of estimated costs before making any decisions. These are extra to your dress.

These additions are charged by a quotation direct from the seamstress; on some occasions we can get fabric/lace to match your dress, but this depends on the designer – just talk to your consultant for any help and advice on this. These are extra to the price of your wedding dress.
